The hills that make the views worth paying for also make the yard hard to use: a slope that drops three or four feet across the lot leaves you with grass you can't sit on and soil that washes toward the house every summer. A retaining wall turns that slope into two usable levels, and it holds the grade instead of letting the rain move it.
Wall work is structural, not decorative, so we build it like structure: proper footing depth, compacted base, gravel backfill and drainage behind the block so water has somewhere to go. On the lakefront lots around Lake Minneola and Johns Lake, that drainage detail is what keeps a wall standing after ten summers instead of leaning after three.
